These years
provide the foundation for future achievement. The student-teacher relationship is still important, but now there is a peer influence at play.
When boys reach upper elementary school, learning is still fun and engaging, but with more complex concepts on the horizon, teachers are responsible for preparing students for the rigorous learning that will take place as they enter middle and upper schools.
Relationships continue to be central to learning. When the boys know the teacher loves and cares for them, they will work hard. Boys feel more comfortable taking risks when the teacher establishes a supportive and trusting environment where they are both nurtured and held accountable. This trusting environment is especially important now that a peer influence is at play, which can affect each boy’s participation in the classroom.

Effective classroom instruction includes:
- Relevant, purposeful lessons that connect boys to the material by using their individual interests to lead to deeper understanding
- Numerous opportunities for movement, teamwork, and open inquiry, which help boys learn and retain information
- Sharing personal experiences and/or using humor to establish a safe environment that strikes a balance between nurture and accountability
Lower School Teacher
More than teaching reading, writing, and math, my job is to impart a love of school and of learning; to teach the boys to be good citizens in and out of the classroom; and to inspire them to solve problems independently.
